Lounging around

Buying new sofas and armchairs is a major investment, so you'll want to get it right first time. We want you to be delighted with your choice, and with so many different options available, it's good to research what’s best for you and your home before you buy.

And if you can't quite decide or you need some guidance, we have dedicated furniture experts and interior designers to provide helpful advice and tips on colour, style and comfort, so your furniture not only looks great, but feels great too.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, we also offer a great bespoke upholstery service, where we can design and create a bespoke sofa exactly to your needs or reupholster a well-loved antique piece that you just can’t bear to part with. With thousands of upholstery grade fabrics, from modern to traditional, from prints to plain, and from some of the top designers on the market, you’ll find something that looks amazing and fits your budget. Just like that!

Here’s a few simple steps to consider;

Sofas can make or break the look of the living space. Whether you’re in your main lounge, an open plan living/dining space, a bedroom, office or nursery, a sofa can really set the scene and offer an incredible wow factor to any scheme. Velvets, decadent, luxurious and packed full of texture. Combined with bang on trend deep rich greens or blues and you have yourself the perfect sofa for 2017.

Think about your needs early on to help you in your search for new living room furniture.  You'll want your new piece of furniture to be in proportion to the rest of the room. A great way to check is to map out the space using paper, or mark out your floor with masking tape. Remember to leave yourself enough space to walk around the room comfortably, not overcrowding the space so you can retain a spacious look and feel. There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a sofa, getting it delivered, and realising you can’t even manage to sit yourself down on it!

A hugely important check is to ensure the furniture will fit through the door when we deliver it If you think it's going to be tricky, a small doorway or furniture being taken past ground floor level, then take a look at furniture that's partial or full assembly. Please also see our guide on measuring to see if your furniture will fit.

Tip

High backs on sofas and chairs may look best in rooms with higher ceilings. Lower backs in less open rooms can give the illusion of more space, but can also be used effectively in open-plan rooms to emphasise the sense of space. Another thing to remember is that light creates space. The fabric colour and style will also hugely influence the visual impact of the room and is useful to consider when deciding on your furniture to ensure you optimise the space you have.

Open-plan space can also be enhanced by using modular furniture in large configurations, but this type of furniture can be helpful in smaller spaces too because of its flexibility. Think about how many visitors you get to your home and how frequently, would modular furniture help in a busy family home where space is key, or is there no immediate requirement for frequent movement of furniture?

If you’re unsure or still can’t decide, our in-store furniture experts can lend a hand. It’s great when our customers bring in measurements and photographs of their rooms along with colour samples of anything the furniture needs to match to – we can then start to guide you on what options are available to you that would work with your scheme. It’s hassle-free and we love a challenge!

We always encourage our customers to order swatches of the fabrics they’re interested in, because we think upholstered furniture is a big deal–a big decision about a big piece. Seeing a picture of your chosen fabric just isn’t the same as touching it and looking at it in different lights. Since there’s nothing like the real thing, there’s nothing like a swatch for giving you the best idea of what you’re interested in.

Tips

Larger rooms. For a clean, minimalist effect, opt for a wooden dining table. Add mismatched chairs for a statement look or buy a set with matching bench or dining chairs.

Smaller spaces. Folding tables are great for fitting into awkward spaces and can be tucked from view when you need a bit more room. More people can be sit comfortably around a round table, especially if it’s got a central pedestal table, they’re extremely practical and beautifully designed too.

Classics, They’re the type of pieces that will serve you well for years to come, both in style and durability. Need chairs as well? look no further than our dining table sets and our chair collection for ideas on which ones sit best with your chosen table.

Statements. Combine sturdiness with glamour or use glass to create light and space in your home. A warm timber frame in a choice of finish has heaps of character without being too over the top. We also have dining tables featuring marble or granite, if you’re looking for a real statement piece, just check our online pages or visit our stores.

Bed Trends

It’s hard to design a bedroom that is stylish yet functional and calming without making it look like a soulless showhome. We all know the importance of a good night’s sleep but do we realise how much the interior can impact this?

When designed correctly, bedrooms are soothing sanctuaries full of cozy bedding and peaceful decor that make you feel both happy and calm.

Clean lines and uncluttered surfaces in combination with warm materials, rich textures and soothing colours.

Add a few pools of light and you got yourself the perfect recipe for a cosy haven of relaxation. Lighting and ambience provide a really important ambience. Look at up to three different lighting focal points within a room, ranging from ceiling lights to bedside lamps.

Cushions and throws add character to a bedroom and provide different levels of texture which can make a room fabulous.

The pantone colour of 2017 is ‘greenery’; this is a refreshing yellow-green shade that brings us closer to nature. Bring this into play with a bold statement wall, vibrant pillow covers or even just plants dotted around your bedroom to breathe new life into it.

As well as colours to consider, Headboards can make a trendy statement. You can opt for a classic neutral style in a plain colour which complements your sheets, or add a little more extravagance by opting for velvet which is bang on trend for this year.

Cork, as a neutral shade that complements the vibrancy of greenery, cork is making a comeback this year. Cork can be incorporated in bedside tables, plant pots, or even a large cork-board to organise all of your thoughts. Not only is cork a stylish material idea that adds warmth and texture to spaces, it’s also ideal for absorbing noise in our increasingly large, open plan homes.’
